Tetris (film, 2022)

The film "Tetris" dives into the captivating story behind the iconic video game developed by Soviet programmer Alexey Pajitnov in 1988. Entrepreneur Hank Rogers swiftly secured the rights to distribute the game in Japan after encountering it at a Las Vegas expo, partnering with Nintendo for its release on the revolutionary Game Boy. Set predominantly in the USSR, the film's characters reflect the era and include inhabitants of the Soviet Union. Despite initial skepticism, Apple TV took the risk of producing and airing this film, a decision that, for many, has already proven worthwhile.
The 8-bit animation is superbly crafted, immersing viewers in the era and ambiance of Tetris with each scene. The characters, portrayed by the cast, are all outstanding. From the somewhat naive but earnest protagonist Hank Rogers to the endearing Alexey Pajitnov, and the patriotic Nikolay Belikov, each character is portrayed convincingly, evoking empathy and support from the audience.
The antagonists are equally noteworthy. Charismatic Valentin Trifonov, driven solely by personal gain, and principled Kevin Maxwell, willing to go to any length for profit, are portrayed with exceptional skill and emotion.
The film's musical and sound accompaniment deserves special mention. From the iconic Tetris theme to the energetic remix of "Holding Out for a Hero" and a plethora of 8-bit tunes, the soundtrack perfectly complements the storyline, creating an immersive experience.
In summary, the film exceeded expectations, masterfully portraying the real-life events behind Tetris while adding intriguing details. Despite its modest budget and predominantly indoor settings, it stands out as a highlight of the year, offering moments of genuine emotion and excitement.
